Nigerian novelist who reclaimed the African story from colonial and racist narratives

Achebe broke the colonial monopoly on how Africa was told, showing the dignity and complexity of Igbo society before and during British conquest. His novels attacked the assumption that Africans had no history or culture worth respecting, and his essay on Joseph Conrad forced Western literature to confront its own racism. That work reshaped postcolonial thought and gave generations of African writers a language of their own.
